What’s with the deal the MTEA made?

John Matthews, executive director of Madison Teachers Inc., which includes some 2,700 members, according to its website, said the governor and Republicans have inadequately funded education in Wisconsin and now want to dump the burden on the backs of teachers.

“Why should teachers be the people to sacrifice here?” Matthews said. “I’ve said this many times, unlike nuns, teachers don’t take a vow of poverty. They’ve got bills to pay, mortgages to pay, kids to feed, too.”

MMSD School Board Elections: The Future of Our Public Schools

By Karen Vieth

Times are rough for public education; there is no contesting that fact. The Madison media is full of talk about charter schools and anti-union sentiment. Next year’s allocations are forcing teachers to face the abysmal reality of our declining budget. Sitting in staff meetings, hearing numbers being crunched, it is difficult to look around and wonder whose job will be cut and what that will mean to our students. Yet, in a recent Wisconsin State Journal article the focus is somehow on a false choice between supporting our teachers or caring for our students. The author neglects the simple fact that teachers exist for the children and the families they serve.  Read more at the link!

Reclaim Wisconsin Rally March 9 – 10

Walker started this fight and we’re going to finish it!

To commemorate the one year anniversary of the dead-of-night passage of Walker’s Act 10 legislation stripping the collective bargaining rights of nearly all public sector workers, the Wisconsin AFL-CIO is hosting a state-wide tour to Reclaim Wisconsin!

This tour culminates in Madison on March 9th and 10th.  Make sure your voice is heard on this infamous anniversary.  Wisconsin workers were sold out while Walker’s corporate funders were given tax breaks and sweetheart deals.  They are still at it!  One year later, Wisconsin is still under attack and we’re still fighting back!  With the Recall elections on the horizon, let’s Stand Together as brothers and sisters to Reclaim Wisconsin!

Friday, March 9, 2012
6:00 PM – Candlelight Vigil, Capitol Square
7:00 PM – Film Screening:  “We Are Wisconsin,”  Orpheum Theater

Saturday, March 10, 2012
1:00 PM – Rally events, music and speakers
2:00 PM – Reclaim Wisconsin March around the Square!

Scott Walker Lies Exposed!

This video proves what we all knew already; that Scott Walker is a bold faced liar.  His claims the he campaigned on eliminating the collective bargaining rights of public employees are shown to be utterly false in this video that was shot just days before the 2010 Election in a meeting with the Oshkosh Northwestern editorial board.

It’s almost too hard to watch, but here’s a link to the video in case you have any people in your life who still claim that he’s doing what he said he would do.

Petition Processing Task Force

The week of February 27th, the GOP will submit challenges to our recall petitions for the Governor and Lieutenant Governor.  Over the next two weeks, we need to review these challenges line by line to determine their validity and help guard against GOP legal shenanigans.  We need a Petition Processing Strike Force to get this done!   Can you join us?

Go to:  http://bit.ly/PPSFWalker  to  join us!

This is an all hands on deck effort!   There will be lots of work to do and a short time window to do it in.  Use the link below to sign up for as many shifts as possible to help ensure our success.  You can also forward this link to your friends and family to ask them to sign up as well.

All challenge verification will take place in a secure location on Madison’s far west side.   Once you sign up online you will receive a confirmation email with more details.

Also, please bring a laptop if you have one available.

We will only have a limited number of computers at the petition processing site.  Bringing your own laptop will help ensure we can accommodate as many people as possible.

Go to: http://bit.ly/PPSFWalker and  join the effort!

Thank you for all your hard work and determination.  It’s incredibly inspiring to work with such a great group of people.  The past year has been an amazing journey and together we’ve accomplished monumental feats.  This effort is one of our most important ones to date.  Let’s show Scott Walker that, “the PEOPLE, UNITED, will NEVER BE DEFEATED!”

Primary Day – Check your polling place and vote

Voting Today:  Two things to keep in mind if you plan on voting today.  The WI Voter ID law is now in effect and you must have a state issued ID to vote.  Also, many poll locations have changed with redistricting.  Although this is not a huge election at least in Dane County (2 races with one of them being contested), please get out and vote.  The more voter irregularity problems that can be fixed in a pretty low-stakes election the better before the Recall and Presidential Elections.

In the one contested primary for Dane County Judge a Walker appointee, Roger Allen, faces off against Ellen Berz and Francis Sullivan.  The top two vote getters advance to the Spring General Election.

How To Find Out If Your Polling Place Has Changed:
2.  Type in your name and birth date
3.  View voter information by clicking on your name
4.  Scroll down and click on Polling Place Location Accessibility (on the lower right hand side)
