One Million Strong!

Wow!  Unbelievable!  Thank you MTI, thank you John Nichols and thank you Wisconsin!

A Million Wisconsinites Petition to Recall Scott Walker

John Nichols on January 17, 2012 – 1:09am ET

Petitions with the names of 1 million Wisconsinites were submitted to state elections officials today, in a move that will jump-start the process of removing the nation’s most notorious antilabor governor from office.

A total of 540,208 valid signatures are required to recall Scott Walker, the Republican governor, who was elected in 2010. On Tuesday afternoon, the United Wisconsin movement that was organized to recall and remove the governor submitted almost twice that number.

….

The figures are ominous for Walker, whose poll numbers collapsed after he attacked the collective bargaining rights of state, county and municipal workers and teachers in a move last winter that provoked mass demonstrations. Neither Walker nor his foes now express serious doubts about the prospect that Wisconsin’s high standard for forcing a recall election will be met.

….

But this recall drive is already the greatest popular democracy movement in Wisconsin history, and one of the greatest challenges to political power in American history.

The signals could not be stronger.

The Wisconsin democracy movement is real.

And Scott Walker should be afraid, very afraid, of the opposition he has unleashed in a state where it is now clear that the people are prepared to defend their rights, and their future.

The Committee to Recall Scott Walker and United Wisconsin are asking that all petitions be turned in by Wednesday, January 10!  If you have any petitions, please turn them in, even if they are only partially filled.  You can turn them in at the MTI Office, or one of the Dem / United Wisconsin Offices listed below.

2. Wausau Road Trip Sign Up!

Daily carpools are going from Madison to Wausau for the remainder of the recall window to recall Senator Pam Galloway.  Senator Galloway has marched in lock step with Governor Walker, calling the bill to repeal collective bargaining rights “a big plus for the state” (Cap Times 12/19/2011). With Governor Walker, she voted to cut millions of dollars in school aide from her district and even more for the state.

Help is needed to put this district in play and take back the majority in the Senate!

Carpools will be heading out at 9AM daily from the Labor Temple on South Park Street through January 14th and will be back around 6-7PM.

Stoke the Recall Fire

As holiday fever spreads across the country, Recall fever spreads across Wisconsin. With over 507,000 signatures and counting, it seems folks across the state are leading their Christmas list with one request, ‘a new governor’. We can deliver on this request if we keep at it!

We need your help on the phones to keep the recall fires stoked through December.

We are calling supporters to recruit additional volunteers:

Monday – Thursday
3:00-6:00 and 6:00-9:00

Friday – Sunday
12:00-3:00 and 3:00-6:00

You can stop by the Dane County East Offices at 330 East Wilson Street (Map), or call / email to find out more info!
608-692-9740 /  danerecalleast@wisdems.org

We have a dedicated staff of volunteers and a kitchen stocked with hot cocoa and warm food to welcome you at the office, so stop on by!

Our crack team of location researchers have teamed up with Recall groups from your neighborhood to help unearth the best places to gather signatures. Our office will send teams of volunteers from 10:00-7:00 to these ‘hot spots’ in the days leading up to the signature deadline, making sure everyone who’s out and about during the holidays will have a chance to sign!

Sign up to volunteer here!

As always, the holidays are a busy time of year.  If you cannot join us by donating your time, you can still support the movement by donating supplies.  We have a few things on the “Office Wish List” that we could use.  Any donations are greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Click here to see our office wish list!

Thanks again for all you’re doing. They can’t stop us now!

A Day of Total Recall – Saturday, December 17

Work with your Faculty Reps to organize and staff a petition event in your school attendance area!

Support United Wisconsin’s ‘Day of Total Recall’ on Saturday, December 17 by targeting a location for 4-6 people to collect signatures.  These locations can be near shopping districts or in a public location where there is steady traffic, either pedestrian or vehicle.

Another option would be to target an event taking place in your area, such as a holiday concert or other community event, where petitions can be circulated.  Consider targeting an area that your staff feels may be underrepesented, such as apartments or other residential facilities.  Another option would be to choose a neighborhood canvas and do a walk list.

United Wisconsin is putting an emphasis on this weekend before the Christmas holiday to ensure that every last signature can be obtained.  Having an army of petitioners out and about is the goal!

To set up a petition station you’ll need:

  • Sign to hold:  Recall Walker, Sign Here, Arrows, etc.
  • Blank petitions for Scott Walker and Rebecca Kleefisch
  • A few clipboards
  • Pens (consider Gel or Sharpie, freezing can be an issue)
  • Hand / Foot warmers are encouraged

Here is a list of sites that have been identified around Dane County:
http://g.co/maps/ucwwz

If you want to join a neighborhood canvas:

Please ensure that someone from your school can attend this meeting to finalize plans, pick up petitions and other materials.

We need your help to Recall Scott Walker!  See you on Thursday!

If you have questions or concerns please contact Jeff Knight (knightj@madisonteachers.org / 257- 0491).
