School Closings and Compensation
In the event of inclement weather, MTI has negotiated provisions, in its various Collective Bargaining Agreements with the District, setting forth criteria for employees under such circumstances.
Teachers: Section V-K-4 provides that should schools be closed, teachers will be compensated for such day on their regular monthly payroll check. However, if it is necessary to extend the school year in order to qualify for state aid, the District may do so up to a maximum of two days. MTI’s Contract requires 182 school days. For a school district to qualify for state aid, 180 days of instruction are necessary; however, the State Superintendent has statutory authority to modify the requirement under certain circumstances.
Educational Assistants (EA-MTI): Section VI-N provides that should schools be closed, educational assistants, at their option, may elect to make up the work time. The administrator, under whom the employee works, must approve the time, dates and duties. Educational assistants "may make up all of the regularly assigned time which was lost…through the completion of one week after the current school year." Work cannot exceed 40 hours per week. Educational assistants who elect to make up the work will be compensated at their regular hourly rate in the pay period in which the make up work is completed.
Clerical/Technical Employees (SEE-MTI): Section V-C provides that should schools be closed, those employees affected may elect to be absent on such day. Such absence may be compensated by the employee’s request in writing to the supervisor to use vacation or compensatory time. The Contract allows clerical employees who elect to work on such days to report up to one hour late.
