CHILDHOOD HUNGER
It’s simple, when children grow up without the right amount and kinds of food, they struggle. As you will see, hunger during the early years can have a major impact on a child’s development, health and behavior.

DEVELOPMENT

  • Hunger has an impact both before and after a child is born:
  • Women who don’t have enough of the right kinds of food are more likely to experience both pregnancy and birth complications
  • Babies born to women struggling with hunger have lower birth weights
  • Children in homes that face hunger have delayed development, poorer attachment, and learning difficulties in the first two years of life

HEALTH

  • Children growing up without enough food are more likely to:
  • Need a hospital
  • Suffer from long-lasting health problems
  • Have oral health problems
  • Have poorer overall physical quality of life

BEHAVIOR

  • The impact of hunger on a child’s behavior in school is frightening, take a look:
  • Higher rates of truancy and tardiness
  • Fighting
  • Hyperactivity
  • Aggression
  • Anxiety
  • Mood swings
  • Bullying
