MTI Board of Directors At-Large Candidates

Name: Leland Pan

Primary Work Location: La Follette High School

Position: Social Worker

What office or position are you seeking: At-Large

Provide a brief statement about yourself:

My name is Leland Pan (he/him) and I have had the privilege of being on the Board of Directors for the past three years. I’m optimistic about the direction MTI is going – I see us moving towards a member-led organizing model, and I see my role on the Board as facilitating your organizing work. In addition to our recertification and member recruitment, I’ve seen so much member energy on issues like protecting our communities from ICE, fighting pay scale compression, pushing for universal free meals, fighting to expand our school based health centers, and a whole host of other issues.

I have been a La Follette rep for the past four years and on the Voters Committee. I have represented MTI at WEAC & NEA events. Prior to working in MMSD, I helped organize a union drive at a charter school and was involved in my prior union (AFT). I also served two terms on the Dane County Board of Supervisors, where I supported pro-labor efforts for county workers and pushed for racial equity in our criminal justice system. Outside of MTI, I’m involved in grassroots organizing around the intersection of urban planning, public transit, and racial & socioeconomic equity.

Name: Jessica Hotz

Primary Work Location: East High School

Position: Social Studies Teacher

What office or position are you seeking?: At-Large

Provide a brief statement about yourself:

I am Jessica Hotz.  I teach History and Social Studies at East High School.  I have been part of MTI’s Faculty Representative Council for over seventeen years and have served on the Board of Directors for the past eight.

I am an empathetic and passionate advocate for educators and students who is unafraid to speak truth to power.  In the midst of a mental health crisis, poorly allocated cuts to education, and administrative power grabs, it is incredibly important that we work to amplify the voices of our members and demand that we be treated with the dignity we deserve.  To do so we must work to identify, communicate, and fight to eliminate the district systems, actions, and policies that deny educators the safe, respectful and equitable working conditions that are necessary for staff, and student, wellness and success.  It is similarly critical that we prioritize the elimination of barriers to equity and racism within our own union.

I am proud to have been a part of the MTI Board of Directors the last few years.  I am energized by the work we are doing to build activism, advocate for public education, and collaborate more and more with other labor and community organizations.

I kindly ask for your vote and the opportunity and honor to continue to work for and with you as we push forward in solidarity for equity, working conditions and teaching conditions that are better for our colleagues, our communities, and the students we hold dear.

Name: Martha Netzloff

Primary Work Location: Mendota Elementary School

Position: 4K Teacher

What office or position are you seeking?: At-Large

Provide a brief statement about yourself:

My name is Martha Dobke Netzloff, and I am seeking your vote to continue my service to our union. With 23 years of teaching experience—including a decade within MMSD across elementary, early childhood, and special education—I have a deep understanding of our classrooms’ daily realities. My commitment to our profession is further bolstered by a law degree from Marquette University, which provides me with a unique legal lens to support our shared advocacy efforts. From leading PR efforts in Sun Prairie during the Act 10 era to representing that district at NEA and WEAC assemblies—as well as serving as an MTI Building Rep, a WEAC representative, and the current Chairperson for the Cabinet on Personnel—I have consistently stood up for members, and for students. The roles I’ve had so far have given me the institutional knowledge needed to navigate our most complex challenges. I am running because I believe our collective need for action is best served by experienced, thoughtful, and determined leadership. I am ready to put my dedication to work for you, and I would be honored to have your vote!

Name: Silvia Gomez de Soriano

Primary Work Location: East High School

Position: BRS-Spanish

What office or position are you seeking?: At-Large

Provide a brief statement about yourself:

I’m running for the MTI board as a BRS to help ensure support staff have a strong influence in our union. It’s important BRS views are represented on the board and their voice is amplified, particularly when solidarity with immigrant community members is as important as ever. I’ve been a union representative at East for 5 years and have helped organize staff and student walkouts, led a parent group for our Spanish speaking families to empower our school community, advise Raza United Student Association & MENA Student Association, organized countless fundraisers to support students and families, and served on MTI’s equity and diversity committee. I’m a proud East graduate and parent of 4 East graduates. This is my community. Vote for me so I can help our union build power amongst rank-and-file staff, students, and families.
